SBC Presidency Candidates Theologically Weak

According to May 7, 2008 Christian Post article, there are now 5 men running for SBC presidency in June 2008. The 5 men are:

  • Johnny M. Hunt, pastor of First Baptist Church of Woodstock, GA. He is known for anti-Calvinist rhetoric.
  • Avery Willis, author of MasterLife. A former missionary and seminary president in India. I do not know much about him, which is what concerns me. I do not hear of or see him in any of the theological circles.
  • William L. Wagner, president of Olivet University International in San Francisco. Bill Wagner is a practitioner and pragmatist at heart; vary little to no theology (but it can be argued that that’s a theology of its own). My impression of him is “relationship first, theology whatever.” Of course, one just needs to know the environment of San Francisco and the kind of students who would be interested in enrolling at Olivet University to see that strongly conservative, let alone Reformed, theology and doctrine are utterly absent.
  • Frank Cox, pastor of North Metro First Baptist Church in Lawrenceville, GA. According to the Feb 14, 2008 SBC Outpost blog, Frank Cox is being nominated to counter Al Mohler’s Calvinistic theology, but in character and mindset, he’s of the “pre-Frank Page” era like Al Mohler.
  • Wiley Drake, a California pastor. In my opinion, too combative in spirit (typical of fundamentalists) and lacks mature, intelligent decision-making and judgment skills.

Too bad Al Mohler has dropped out of the race. I hope the two Californians lose because of their strange and lackidasical ecclesiology and theology. And I hope Johnny Hunt loses also because of his anti-Calvinist rhetoric. As for Willis and Cox, no comment as of yet.
