Involvement Of Unordained Persons In Corporate Worship Services

The Orthodox Presbyterian Church’s 1991 General Assembly discussed the role of unordained persons in corporate worship services. Here are some of their currently existing mandates that I found intriguing.

  • Unordained persons are to be active participants in congregational singing, responsive reading, bringing offerings, and receiving the Lord’s Supper.
  • They are to give undivided attention to the reading and preaching of Scripture, prayer, salutation, and benediction by the minister.
  • They are to, when the occasion arises, recite the Lord’s Prayer and the Apostles’ Creed.
  • They may sing in choirs and even as soloists.
  • Unordained individuals are limited from any individual expressions (including preaching, praying aloud and reading Scripture to the congregation).
